Consistency is the key to locking up a playoff spot, but it won't necessarily win you a championship. Sure, building a team around Drew Brees, Chris Johnson, or Adrian Peterson is a great start, until you consider the fact that their owners combined to go just 25-23 in the first round of the Elite Fantasy Football playoffs.
Round one was riddled with major upsets, as #2 seeds posted a surprising 6-10 record. Top seeds faired much better at 10-6, but several top 10 teams including Packer Hater and Vegas Knights lost tight matches to teams who barely snuck into the playoffs. I couldn't help but wonder, how'd they do it? I began digging for trends amongst successful teams in round one and found one glaring statistic: owners of Robert Meachem, Miles Austin, and Percy Harvin combined for a record of 35-13. This pattern can mean a lot of things, the most obvious among them being the fact that these players scored a massive amount of points over weeks 12 and 13. More importantly, this trend speaks to the importance of activity on the free agent market and waiver wire. I think we will see the most successful teams in this seasons playoffs have a balance of reliable stars secured on draft day, offset by a bench that features high-impact free agents.
It will be interesting to see if Brandon Marshalls 53-point outburst will be enough to carry his owners to the next round, or if waiver wire saviors such as Quiton Ganther, Arian Foster, and Chris Jennings will be the difference-makers. Check back next week to find out.
